About Phalaborwa
Phalaborwa is a town located in the Mopani district, positioned halfway up the length of the Kruger National Park in the Limpopo province in South Africa. Phalaborwa itself inhabits 131 000 people. The Lowveld, also known as Valley of the Elephants, has the highest winter temperatures in the country. Various accommodations facilities are established in Phalaborwa, the business sector is also very active in this largely mining community.
Tourism and wildlife plays a leading role in the life of this town. The most familiar tourist attraction in Phalaborwa is probably the Amarula Lapa with an Amarula liqueur tasting and tour. Phalaborwa is also the only town in South Africa that borders the Kruger National Park and not far from there lays the Mozambican border which is only two hours away. Furthermore the Hans Merensky Golf Estate is to be found on the edge of the town and is one of the best golf estates in the country.

The winter temperatures in this region vary from a coldish 11°C up to 25°C. Throughout the summer, the usual temperatures range from 20°C to 47°C – and although the rainfall rather low is in the Phalaborwa area, you’ll find sporadic/occasional heavy rainfall during summer.

Over the years Phalaborwa has developed into a tourist attraction, although it originally started as a mining town. Phalaborwa is still home to the Phalaborwa Mining Company and their open cast mine, that’s approximately 2 000 meters wide, is Africa’s widest man-made hole and can be found in this town.

Near Phalaborwa gateway, is a reconstructed ‘Ba-Phalaborwa’ hill village, named Masorini. The ‘Ba-Phalaborwa’ name was giving by the Sotho, 400AD, when they moved away from the south. This name meaning ‘better than the south’. This village offers site-seeing to huts, grain storage areas, and an iron smelting spot.

South African fast bowler, Dale Steyn also resides from this town.
